Cavity Wall Insulation

Properties in the UK that are built after the 1920s typically have cavity walls. Cavity walls are named for the gap in between their two wall layers. It is in this cavity, that insulation material can be injected.

While cavity walls are generally better insulated than solid walls, their thermal efficiency can still be improved drastically through Cavity Wall Insulation. The added insulation will help lower your energy bills and aid in combating mould and condensation.

Cavity Wall Insulation 1

Cavity Wall Insulation involves filling the gap between your walls with the insulation material of your choice. You can choose from mineral wool, polystyrene beads, and foamed insulants.

To insert the insulation material into the wall cavity, small holes around 23 millimeters in size must be drilled in the mortar joints of your walls. For maximum coverage, the holes should be roughly 1.5 meters apart.

Once the holes are drilled, the installers will blow the insulation into the cavity using specialized equipment. Once the cavity is full of insulation material, the holes must be filled-in, to prevent moisture from seeping in. The entire process takes about 2 hours and if done properly, no further maintenance will be needed.

Your property likely has cavity walls if:

  • It was built after the 1920s.
  • Its brickwork has a regular pattern.
  • The walls are more than 260 millimeters in width.
  • The walls are made of brick and not of stone.

Your property is suitable for cavity wall insulation if it meets the following criteria:

  • If the cavity of its external walls are uninsulated.
  • The gap between the external walls is at least 50 millimeters wide.
  • The brickwork/masonry of the walls are in fine shape.
  • The walls are not exposed to driving rain.
  • There are no damp spots in your internal walls.
  • Access to the external walls is not blocked.

The cost of installing Cavity Wall Insulation can vary, depending on the condition of your home, the type of insulation system currently installed, and the size of your property.
